State of the Environment (SoE) 2016 follows the same structure and approach as the 2011 release, while improving the capacity to make comparisons over time. It also continues the approach of report-card assessments of pressures, condition and trends, as well as discussion of risk, resilience and future outlooks.

SoE 2016 includes an overview and examination of the drivers of environmental change. It is divided into nine detailed thematic reports on atmosphere, built environment, heritage, biodiversity, land, inland water, coasts, marine and the Antarctic environment.
