A new report from the Office of the Chief Economist presents key facts and figures on Australia’s energy sector, including the latest information on energy resources, production, consumption, trade and prices. Energy in Australia 2015 also tracks Australia’s energy market performance against other countries.

Coal, oil and gas extraction industries are currently Australia’s largest industries, contributing $52.3 billion to industry gross value added in 2014–15. The electricity supply industry contributed a further $26.4 billion.

Renewable energy is examined, with significant growth anticipated in the uptake of solar, geothermal, wind and ocean-wave energy transformation. Solar PV is already installed on 17% of Australian households.

Energy in Australia 2015 also finds that energy consumption in Australia has been declining as a result of energy efficiency initiatives in many sectors.

The report is an essential source of information for policymakers and industry in understanding Australia’s energy markets.
