In its July 2011 Securing a Clean Energy Future package, the Australian Government announced it would extend the Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program to include electricity and natural gas transmission and distribution networks and greenfield and major expansion projects.

Under the expansion:

• electricity and gas transmission and distribution networks that use more than 0.5 PJ of energy in a financial year would be required to register for the EEO program; and

• major new development and major expansions that are expected to consume or increase operating energy consumption significantly would be required to undertake an assessment at the design stage.

The government aims to have the relevant EEO regulations in place by 1 July 2012.

Stakeholder Consultation

To ensure the design of proposed program extensions are effective and efficient the Department is undertaking a consultation process.

Two options papers have been published which outline the proposed approach to extend the program in these areas. Written submissions are invited from interested parties.

A series of stakeholder forums have also been conducted.
